Every believer faces decisions that keep them awake at night — a marriage proposal, a new job, a move abroad. Islam does not leave us to guess. The Prophet ﷺ taught a short prayer called Salat al-Istikhara for exactly these moments, and Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said he taught it to them as carefully as he taught them the Quran.
When should you pray Istikhara?
Pray Istikhara for any permissible matter where you are unsure which way is better. It is not prayed for things that are already obligatory (like salah) or clearly forbidden. You can pray it at any time except the disliked times for prayer — many people choose the night, after Isha, when the heart is calm.
Steps of Salat al-Istikhara
- Make wudu with full attention, as you would for any prayer.
- Pray two rakat of nafl with the intention of Istikhara. Many scholars recommend Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rakah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second, but any surah is valid.
- After salam, praise Allah and send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ.
- Recite the dua of Istikhara. When you reach the words “hadhal-amr” (this matter), mention your matter in your heart or aloud.
- Close with salawat again and leave the outcome to Allah.
O Allah, I seek Your guidance through Your knowledge, and I seek ability through Your power, and I ask You of Your immense bounty. For You have power and I have none; You know and I do not know; and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me and bless it for me. And if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me content with it.
How do you know the answer?
A dream is not required. The scholars explain that the answer usually appears in three ways: the matter becomes easy and doors open, or it becomes difficult and doors close; your heart settles towards one choice; and events unfold in a way that makes the right path clearer over time. You may repeat Istikhara for up to seven days if you still feel unsure.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deciding first and praying Istikhara only to feel reassured.
- Waiting for a dream and ignoring how the matter is actually unfolding.
- Skipping consultation (mashwara) with wise family members — Istikhara and mashwara go together.
- Losing patience if the outcome is not what you hoped for.
